DEF in Turkey

Ishara Press published the first-ever multimedia sign language teaching materials in Turkey in 2008. The materials were piloted in a sign language project in Turkey, and are now used in a number of sign language classs.

In accordance with the Ishara Press publications policy, profits from the book are now used 2009 to support a sign language teacher training program in Istanbul.

DEF in Pakistan

DEF is in the process of establishing a National Contact Point in Pakistan, working in partnership with the Pakistan Association of the Deaf (PAD) in Karachi. DEF representative Hamid Zeshan spent three months in Karachi from Sept - Nov 2008, teaching English literacy classes to deaf students, and conducting a 6-week teacher training workshop. Working with the PAD on programme development, "deaf awareness" events, and institutional networking were also important objectives of this pilot phase.
